Mahesh Basnet is a Nepalese Communist politician. He was a member of the House of Representatives elected from Bhaktapur district from 2017 to 2025. He served as Minister of Industry under Prime Minister Sushil Koirala. He served as Chief of Youth Force Nepal in 2008 and is serving as Chairman of Youth Association Nepal since 2009. He contested the 2013 Nepalese Constituent Assembly election from Bhaktapur district constituency number 2. He constantly draws himself into controversy by spreading hate speech and racist comments

According to the Election Commission, Bhaktapur - 2 constituency Mahesh Basnet of Nepal Communist Party (UML) has been elected. Accumulating 36,412 votes, Mahesh Basnet secured a lead of 17,725 votes over the nearest rival. The runner-up was Daman Nath Dhungana (Nepali Congress) with 18,687 votes. Anuradha Thapa Magar of Nepal Majdur Kisan Party finished third with 5,471 votes. The vote share is approximately 57.7% of total valid votes.
